How tall does a mountain have to be to be considered a mountain (and no longer a hill, bump, or a mere “rise”)? Is this measured from sea level? Or is it measured in reference to the mountains, hills, bumps and rises around it?
What distinguishes a valley from a canyon? Or a valley from a gulley or a glenn? Is it the depth? or the steepness of the sides?
Or… is it just whatever name we give it? Mount Everest sounds better than Everest Hill? Or the Grand Canyon sounds better than the Grand Gulley?
I think we should all start assigning our own names to features. “Hey, the Mississippi Creek sure is flowing today.” “We’re going to visit the Great Ponds this summer!”
