Smells Good?

— Aaron

When people say “something smells”, why does that mean the same thing as “something smells bad”? Why doesn’t it mean the same as “something smells good”‘? Underlying that whole thing is the assumption that having a scent is normally a bad thing.

And why does it mean the same thing as “something smells funny”? Do you connect any smells with particular jokes? Has anything ever smelled humorous to you? Has a smell ever made you laugh, or even think “That was comical”? Why do we say things smell funny if there is no humor associated with it?
